Programmes

Reading Roots creates space for children to grow at their own pace as they build English literacy foundations.

Working with a volunteer each week, each child gets individualised guidance and encouragement to build reading capabilities. With time, they build confidence to learn alongside their peers during formal school hours.

We consistently adapt and develop new curriculum to nurture reading roots for all children, anchored in the principles below.

Our Guiding Principles

1. Personalised Support

We do our best to meet the children where they are.

All children work with volunteers 1-on-1, at their own pace, with learning plans adapted to their interests and needs.

2. Nurturing Space

We create spaces for a love for reading to take root.

Beyond interactive activities, the children enjoy learning journeys to apply language beyond the classroom with encouraging volunteers by their side.

3. Literary Focused

We work with the children to build strong literacy foundations.

Rather than focusing on academic success, we support each child in building fundamentals (using Jolly Phonics and Fitzroy Readers) and confidence in their abilities.

Our Programmes

Our programmes support children aged 4 to 9. Each child starts their Reading Roots journey with our Seeds programme, growing to reach Sprouts & Trees-level programmes at their own pace.

Through consistent practice and time, they build strong foundations and a love for reading.

For ages 4 to 7:

Seeds

Using a curriculum anchored in Jolly Phonics, we use a mix of multi-sensory approaches, movement and music.

Children are guided to build foundations systematically – from letter sounds, to letter formation, blending, and more.

For ages 7 to 9:

Sprouts & Trees

We use a mix of Jolly Phonics and Fitzroy Readers to keep building foundations. We introduce new worlds through diverse books and learning journeys.

Children also enjoy free reading, which enables agency and improves reading fluency.

Book Club:

Open to all children in Dover, even if they don’t attend other Reading Roots sessions.

We invite children in Dover to explore different worlds through books and craft activities every fortnight.

Through introductions to roughly 26 books a year and access to our mini-library, they get to discover the joy of reading in a safe and welcoming space.

Hear from the Reading Roots Community

I can see a lot of improvement in her English writing. She [Siva] has a lot of fun and enjoyment too.

Mother of Siva

I think the learning approach by the teachers was professional and easy to understand by my child. The small group class was a great way for my child to learn skills well.
